All aboard the Tuchel train! #CHOOOCHOOO

Updated: Feb 8, 2021

Game week 23 is over and it's been a great one for Chelsea!!

We started the game week on the same points as Everton in 6th place. Everton drew 3-3 with Man United, West Ham drew 0-0 with Fulham and Leicester City drew 0-0 with Wolves so four of the teams above us dropped two points then Liverpool lost 4-1 to Man City, meaning only Man City and us picked up the three points in top seven teams.

This has meant we've closed the gap on most of the teams above us. Man City is the exception who is now starting to pull away from the crowd. We have moved up a place into 5th place and now just a point behind Liverpool in 4th. Just three league games ago we were seven points behind Liverpool.

A quick match review

In the first half, we didn't really do much in terms of creating and it looked very sluggish in terms of crisp play but it feels like the matches have caught up with all team in the league this GW. Just before HT, we went ahead with a clinical finish from Mason Mount. In the second half, we improved a bit but still had a few shaky moments in defense. Then Rudiger and Mendy got into confusion which leads to it being 1-1. Before we had any time to complain Mount closed down the defender to pass it back to his GK which was pounced on by Werner and he knocked it around the GK and got knocked over for a penalty. Jorginho calmly slotted the penalty in and I instantly forgot about the own goal. Yes, that ball should have been cleared but I'm giving him the benefit of the doubt as I think he was our best defender tonight. We brought Kante on in the last 15 minutes and the result started to look in the bag. We started to keep hold of the ball and make Sheffield United run while the time ran down.

A special mention to Timo Werner. Still on a scoring drought but an assist and fouled for the penalty. He put in a top shift and hopefully that gives his confidence a boost.

Unbeaten in our last four matches. The Thomas Tuchel train continues to go.

Next up is a FA Cup away tie against Barnsley on Thursday night. Kick-off at 8 pm and live on BBC1. We then have a home game against Newcastle in the league on Monday night.
